BRAC Starts Voting on Closures of Military Bases

Some good news for North Carolina as the Base Closure and Realignment Commission began voting on Department of Defense recommendations Wednesday. The commission voted unanimously to close Georgia's Fort McPherson and move forces command and reserve command to Pope Air Force Base, which is adjacent to Bragg. The Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, Virginia has survived for now, but commissioners expressed unease about the sprawling air base at odds with a growing beachside community. The only way the BRAC and the president can be reversed is by a joint resolution of Congress and some lawmakers have already indicated they're looking into their options.
