The Army Corps of Engineers is doing some emergency dredging in Oregon Inlet. The area known as "Hell's Gate" is now as shallow as three feet in some areas. Officials with the Army Corps Wilmington district say the current dredging, which could last for several weeks, will deepen that area to eight or nine feet. Officials say they will have to come back later this fall and dredge the area until they reach 12 feet to help fishing boats during the winter fishing season, which begins in November.
