Oregon Inlet will continue to see emergency dredging at least through September at the part that connects Wanchese to the inlet and the Pamlico Sound. The area is known as Hell's Gate, and officials say its dangerously shoaled and shallow in areas. Hells Gate is considered to be a crucial passage for commercial and recreational boat traffic through the inlet. An official says water depth gets as shallow as three feet in certain spots.
