Workers Scramble to Help Fellow Employee

An accident inside a sawmill sends workers scrambling to help a colleague and a chopper called in to airlift him to the hospital. The Airlink helicopter from Wilmington flew to Weyerhaeuser's New Bern paper mill. The company says the incident happened inside the plant's sawmill, when a 25-year veteran employee, who has not been identified, was seriously injured. Spokesperson Susan Larkin says co-workers nearby gave first aid, as Craven County rescue crews responded. The helicopter flew that worker to Pitt County Memorial Hospital around 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon. The State Department of Labor and plant safety teams are investigating that workplace accident.
