Over the next several weeks, beginning August 1st, motorists can experience detours along Highway 33 between Greenville and Chocowinity.
It's all part of the North Carolina Moving Ahead Program, which is designed to help modernize 2 lane roads. Statewide the project is a 700 million dollar initiative. The first phase along highway 33 is replacing crosspipes and drain pipes that are inadequate, therefore forcing detours for the next several weeks.
Eventually, the entire section of 33 between Greenville and Chocowinity will be widened and resurfaced. But that part of the project won't happen until next March.
Nearly 10,000 motorists use Highway 33 each and every day.
