As folks in Eastern Carolina experience triple digits in temperatures this week, many have to battle the heat without air conditioning. Eighty-two-year old Mattie Taylor is no different. The only thing that keeps her cool is a fan donated to her by the Pitt County Council on Aging. Miss Taylor has an air conditioning window unit in her living room, but refuses to use it because she says it makes her utility bill too high. Miss Taylor's nurse says you should always keep an eye on the elderly and small children when experiencing this type of heat wave, because their bodies can't adjust to the high temperatures as easily.
