Beaufort County school board members have reversed a decision that would have prevented schools from being named after people.
Complaints from the black community is what sparked the controversy. That's because the new P.S. Jones Middle School would have just been known as Washington Middle School. Monday, the policy was overturned after alumni of the original P.S. Jones school defended the historical significance of the name. Under the policy they adopted and then changed, all new schools would have adopted the name of the region in which it was constructed.
