Wreck Sends Family of 4 into Deep Canal

Dare County officials had a bad wreck on their hands Sunday evening.

Officials say that a car had pulled over on the side of Highway 12 south of Whalebone Junction near Oregon Inlet on Bodie Island a little after 6 Sunday evening, when it tried to do a u-turn. The driver didn't see a car coming from behind it and the two collided, sending a car with 2 grandparents and 2 children inside into a deep canal. Luckily bystanders and deputies on the scene were able to rescue all four people from the car in the water. The grandmother has been airlifted to Norfolk General Hospital. Deputies say the woman who made the u-turn was cited for the wreck, but that State Highway Patrol troopers are still investigating.
