A winter weather advisory is in effect until 7am on Saturday for Beaufort, Mainland Hyde, Martin, Outer Banks Dare, Tyrrell, Washington and western Dare County. The threats are black ice and slick roadways.
Just say no! It's a slogan used by many school systems to relay the ever important message of refraining from drugs, but leaders wanted more Saturday.
On many urban streets across Eastern Carolina those words are unheard when it comes to drug pushers who prey on the young and impressionable, encouraging the use of illicit substances. That's why in Plymouth in Washington County Saturday community leaders gathered kids, explaining to them the often misinterpreted causes and effects of drugs. The "Drug-Free-Me" activity was held at the Love and Union Temple where organization leaders say it's sometimes easier for kids to come and accept information about drugs from community leaders than from people in their own homes.
The town mayor, law enforcement, church leaders and other pillars in the Plymouth community were there to lend words of encouragement to the "Drug-Free-Me" activity as well.
