On Cedar Island in Carteret County Hurricane Ophelia uprooted trees, tore shingles off roofs and tossed metal buildings aside like pieces of paper. Torrential rains soaked the roads and yards there. The National Guard rolled into town and provided water and ice to those who needed it. Cedar Island officials say the majority of residents chose to ride out the storm in their homes, but no major injuries were reported.
