Possible Closure Of Oceana Could Affect Outlying Landing Field

The BRAC commission voted to add Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach to the list of military bases under consideration for closure or realignment. The OLF is to be used for practice takeoffs and landings for jets now at Oceana. Congressman G.K. Butterfield is among those wondering if the possible closure of Oceana would mean an OLF wouldn't be needed. Butterfield has asked for a meeting with Navy officials to address that and other related questions. In the meantime, Navy officials believe an OLF is still needed. That's what they were saying Tuesday after meeting with environmental officials to re-examine possible environmental impact as ordered by a judge. The Navy heads back to court Wednesday asking a judge to lift an order that halted the project.
