Pitt County Memorial Hospital has just received what they're calling a state of the art tool to help its patients who require brain surgeries. Several doctors and other invited guests were on hand Tuesday to see the delivery of the Leksell Gamma Knife. The 20-ton ball shaped piece of equipment will allow doctors to remove benign and malignant tumors or lesions in a patient's brain, all without cutting into the skull. The Gamma Knife is expected to be fully operational in October. So far, about 90 patients are signed up for treatment. Doctors will be able to treat up to four patients a day, who otherwise would have to go to Winston-Salem to the next closest Gamma Knife center for treatment.
