A 42-year-old Dover woman is behind bars after being charged over the weekend for abandoning the fetus she prematurely delivered. LaGrange Police say Brenda Howard Patterson concealed her pregnancy before giving birth to a fetus estimated to be 20 weeks old. The fetus was found in a container inside a LaGrange Village Apartment located on North Wooten Street. Several concerned citizens alerted the police who found the dead fetus. After police located Patterson, both she and the fetus were taken to the hospital. Patterson was arrested after she was released from the hospital. The fetus was sent to Pitt County Memorial Hospital for an autopsy. The preliminary results indicate that the fetus was stillborn.
