Great Spot To Beat The Heat

Some trying to beat the heat had one stretch of the coast mostly to themselves Monday. And they do most every day. It's Hammocks Beach State Park in Onslow County, where a ferryboat takes visitors from the mainland near Swansboro, to Bear Island. A cool breeze and overcast skies kept temperatures very pleasant, while people a few miles away were sweating through another 100-degree plus afternoon. Rangers say low water in the channel is limiting some trips for the ferries, so its a good idea to call ahead and find out when high-tides will allow the maximum number of passengers to head to and from the beach.
