Flooding Along the Outer Banks Causes Traffic Troubles

The heavy rains that prompted a flash flood warning in Currituck County didn't hit the Dare County town of Duck quite as hard, but the usual nuisance flooding surfaced once again. The stretch of Highway 12 in front of the Tuckahoe neighborhood has been identified as the number one floodwater problem in Duck. Together with the town of Southern Shores and the North Carolina Department of Transportation, a consultant has been hired to determine the top five trouble spots along N.C. 12 in each of the two towns and has been charged with coming up with a workable solution to begin engineering next spring. Traffic was slowed Wednesday because of standing water, but was further hampered by the Southern migration from Corolla vacationers, which number in the fifty thousand range in addition to the twenty or so thousand currently in Duck all traveling the same two lane road. In order to minimize contamination of the Currituck Sound with roadside debris the floodwater from in front of Tuckahoe is pumped by the town into the Bias Shores neighborhood next door, onto an undeveloped lot agreed upon by the property owners there.
