Software maker SAS is considering plans to build the state's largest solar energy generator on its campus in Cary.

The News & Observer reported Tuesday that the project could produce up to 1 megawatt of electricity, which is enough to power about 185 homes. The largest solar project to date in North Carolina is the state zoo in Asheboro, which generates 105 kilowatts of energy.

SAS spokesman Dave Thomas said the company is looking for ways to be more environmentally friendly. But he said the project may not be economically feasible.

If successful, the project could save SAS millions of dollars in tax breaks.

The state provides tax credits worth 35 percent of installment costs, or up to $2.5 million. Federal tax credits are worth up to 30 percent of expenditures in solar technology.
