Bear and Vehicle Collide

A black bear was struck by a car and killed on Highway 33 in the Beaufort County town of Chocowinity Thursday night.

The bear's carcass ended up in a woman's front yard along Highway 33 East. The woman tells us the female bear and her cub were crossing the roadway when the accident happened. There's no word what happened to the cub.

State bear biologist Mark Jones tells us residents were wise to steer clear of the bear, as the big animals are often only injured and can still bite and claw if approached.

Officials say the State Department of Transportation is responsible for removing the bear's body, and that it's illegal for anyone other than the D.O.T. to remove it.
