Wednesday was declared Lieutenant Jerry Mills day in the city of Greenville. Mills was the first and only Greenville firefighter ever to lose his life while on duty. Wednesday marked the 25th anniversary of his death. Dozens of active and retired fire fighters, police officers, city leaders and family members gathered to remember and honor Mills. Mills died after falling through the roof of a burning home. Lt. Mills was 27 when he died and had been with the fire department for nine years.
