Tragedy has struck at a Carteret County beach this holiday weekend. A Beaufort County man drowned Sunday morning in the waters off Atlantic Beach.
Chief Adam Snyder with Atlantic Beach Fire and Rescue says a 48-year-old male from Washington was found floating in the waters near the circle around 11:00 Sunday morning.
Snyder says the man could swim and didn't indicate he was in trouble, but witnesses told investigators the man has a long history of medical problems and they may have contributed to the drowning.
An autopsy is being performed and Synder expects to have the results in a few days. Ocean conditions were fairly mild Sunday.
