Fort Macon State Park in Carteret County rang in the Fourth of July with a big bang. For several years now, Fort Macon has hosted the live firing of a Civil War era cannon.

Dressed in authentic costume and using real gunpowder, volunteers showed close to 100 spectators how a cannon is primed, loaded and ultimately fired. Park officials say the cannon firing is one of the most popular events at the fort.

Park rangers say the Fourth of July is one of the busiest days all year at the park.
