Smithfield To Close Kinston Facility

By  |

Another blow for the Kinston economy. Smithfield Packing announced today that it will shut down its smoked ham manufacturing facility on West Vernon Avenue.

Smithfield says there are currently 476 employees at that operation.

Another Smithfield facility in Kinston that opened in November 2006 will not be impacted.

Smithfield says the West Vernon Avenue location dates back to 1948, and the age of the facility prompted the company to move its operations elsewhere.

The plant will shutdown May 9th and employees will be offered jobs at other Smithfield facilities in Eastern Carolina.
