It's a lesson in history. Students in the maritime studies program at East Carolina University are studying the wreckage of the Civil War Gunship Ostego that was sunk in the Roanoke River in 1865. Students say they recently discovered two holes in the ship believed to be made by Confederate torpedoes. A professor with the program says the project gives students a chance to work on their diving and archeology skills. Once their diving is complete the students will write about their findings, and draw schematics of the ship.
