Firetower Future

It's hard to miss the 120-foot tall firetower which has stood on Firetower Road in Winterville since the mid 1960s. Now there is some talk of dismantling it, or even relocating it elsewhere. That's because Firetower Road is expected to be widened to a four-lane road in the next several months. The Firetower, which is maintained by the Pitt County Chapter of the North Carolina Forestry Service hasn't been used to spot fires for several years. The firetower was built in 1952, and stood on Greenville Boulevard until the mid 1960s. That's when it was moved to its current location. It's not certain when a decision will be made on its future, or when the road widening will begin.
