Protecting Their Nest

You won't need a ticket to watch the act under one marquee in Beaufort County. A male and female Killdeer have taken the stage, protecting four well-camouflaged eggs in a nest on the ground. Until the baby birds hatch, both mom and dad are taking turns pretending to have broken wings or tail feathers, as they lead curious predators and people away from their flock. Similar pairs of leading men and ladies have been reported in parking lots at public buildings in Onslow County and Pitt County.
