Tax Revolt

A special election may be in Dare County's future following a grass roots effort to repeal what many are calling "the sand tax." The county commission passed an additional one-cent sales tax to fund beach nourishment back in April. Effective January 1, Dare County will go to eight cents on the dollar, the highest sales tax in the state. A group calling itself "beach-huggers," turned in over 5,000 signatures Monday to the Dare County Board of Elections, requesting a referendum on the issue. Election officials have two weeks to verify the signatures. Afterwhich, a three-member board will set a date for the election.
