Monitoring Mercury in Our Fish in Eastern Carolina

Last May, we showed you how mercury in fish here in Eastern Carolina has become a health concern, one that is now getting a new scientific look, thanks to America's riverkeepers. As we did last year, the Waterkeeper's Alliance and Neuse Riverkeeper Larry Baldwin have started taking samples of bass from rivers. They want to create a baseline of mercury levels in fish that people eat. Baldwin will be sending samples to UNC- Wilmington for lab tests to see if mercury levels in that common American fish could be harmful to humans. Baldwin hopes some of those numbers will be back this fall, and we'll keep you posted on the results.
