Authorities say the first Memorial Day weekend traffic fatality happened early Saturday morning.
Highway Patrol Troopers say that 36 year old William Stanford King was killed around 5:17 Saturday morning on Highway 258 outside of Fountain in Pitt County. Troopers say that King was speeding and was not wearing a seatbelt when he lost control and hit a tree. King was pronounced dead at the scene. Its unclear if alcohol was a factor.
