Plans to repair a bridge in Bertie County has some residents of Washington County upset.

State Department of Transportation officials say they plan to resurface the N.C. Highway 45 bridge in Bertie County because the bridge's surface has weakened considerably over the years with all the heavy traffic.

The DOT says they plan to resurface the bridge using water under extremely high pressure to break up the concrete. The water used will be gathered in a vacuum process. The water will then be treated and then poured into a nearby pond in Washington County.

Some Washington County residents were concerned the treated water may still not be suitable for the environment. The DOT met with concerned residents Thursday.
