BRAC Hits Pope Air Force Base Hard, Fort Bragg Fares Well

A major realignment is planned for Pope Air Force Base and Fort Bragg in Fayetteville. Pope had a big loss with 4281 troops. The base did gain 808 civilian postings. And Fort Bragg, also in Fayetteville, had a huge gain. The base got a boost of 4078 troops and 247 civilians. The military population for Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force is more than 58,000 with the civilian number coming in over 9,500. The bases are the home of the 18th Airborne Corps, the U.S. Army Special Operations Command and the 43rd Airlift Wing. The salaries for the bases are about 2.4 billion. The economic impact on Fayetteville and the surrounding area is around 4.7 billion.
