The Chowan County Courthouse in Edenton re-opened in grand style back in October 2004 after a $3,000,000 renovation project. The North Carolina State Supreme Court came for the ceremonies, holding its first case there in over a century. Now, for the first time in nearly 300 years, state lawmakers will meet in Edenton for a legislative session. It will be a regular working session, on May 25. Edenton became the first capital of North Carolina when, in 1722, the governor's council chambers were constructed in the coastal town.
