Vacationer on Outer Banks Dies From Legionnaires' Disease

Video will be available shortly.

A South Nags Head rental cottage is under quarantine and its patrons are being monitored after the death of a former tenant. Dare County health authorities say an elderly Virginia man died after contracting Legionnaires' Disease the week of April 23 from a hot tub at a house on Old Oregon Inlet Road. Health Director Anne Thomas received confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control on Monday. The house was vacated last week after Virginia authorities notified Dare County the 85-year-old man had died, and three other family members fell ill. But Thomas says the general public is not in harms way. Only two cases of Legionnaires disease have been reported in Dare County since 2000, but it's questionable if the disease was actually contracted while those people were on the Outer Banks.
