Tuition and fees are increasing across the University of North Carolina system.

The UNC Board of Governors on Friday approved an average tuition increase of 1.2 percent for in-state undergraduate students. The increase will take effect this fall.

Fees will increase by 4.5 percent, pushing the average student's total annual bill up 2.1 percent.

Tuition increases vary across the system's 16 campuses.

At ECU, tuition for in-state undergrads will climb just 0.6%, or $14. Required fees jump another $24, but the university's debt service fee drops $70. That means tuition and fees at ECU next year will be $32 less than this year.

The average tuition increase this year on UNC campuses was 5.2 percent. In the 2006-2007 school year, tuition increased 12.1 percent.

The board had capped tuition increases at 6.5 percent but didn't need to increase rates by that much because of extra money given to the system by the General Assembly.
