Polio Vaccine First Used 50 Years Ago

Video will be available shortly.

Polio, a contagious disease that crippled a President and killed thousands of people each year, met its match 50 years ago Tuesday. On April 12, 1955 Doctor Jonas Sulk developed an effective polio vaccine following a massive trial on nearly two million children. But many born before this medical break through have been forced to lead their lives with the challenges and hardships polio brings. While polio has virtually been eradicated in the United States, in some third world countries it still kills thousands.
