They speak more than one language and can spot trouble by scent.
For many law enforcement divisions K-9's have become a tremendous resource. Earlier this week a New Bern Police K-9 handler and his dog Fando found a missing man suffering from dementia by his scent after just 19 minutes.
K-9's aid lawmen not only in finding missing persons, but also in building searches, officer protection and detecting illegal substances.
Many K-9's like Fando respond to silent commands as well. These K-9 units train six hours each Monday and participate in annual training and certification classes.
