Restoring the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to Its Former Glory

A momentous restoration effort is underway at the Graveyard of The Atlantic Museum in Hatteras Village. Nationally known lighthouse specialist, James Woodward is rebuilding the original first order Fresnel lens that once crowned the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Vandals nearly picked the ten foot frame clean of glass prisms during the 1940s, following World War Two. The bronze skeleton and remaining glass prisms have been in National Park Service storage for decades. A few pieces of the lens have actually resurfaced from the community in recent days, as people learn of the restoration effort.
