Six public schools in Bertie County will get a major physical education grant to help provide better physical education and healthy eating programs for students.

The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust awarded $170,000 to the school district. The money is part of $1,000,000 awarded to 32 schools statewide.

Statistics show in Bertie County alone, over 37% of children 12-18 years old are overweight.

The grant will be used to purchase workout equipment and heart monitors to better assess the students physical health.
