More than 2 million gallons of raw sewage escaped Jacksonville's main pumping station, that's on Marine Boulevard near Phillips Park.

The mess ran into a swampy area adjacent to Chaney Creek. City crews were able to contain about 327,000 gallons, but another 1.8 million gallons went downstream. Chaney Creek flows into the New River, but the city says because of the wind and tide, most of the spill has not make it that far yet.

Jacksonville says it's found 300 to 400 finger mullets dead in the creek. The city says it's not sure whether the fish died from the spill or from the cold weather.

City Manager Kristoff Bauer says an internal investigation is underway as to why both the primary and backup systems failed.

It's believed the spill happened sometime after 5:00 p.m. last night and 6:00 a.m. this morning.
