Family Says Justice System Is Failing Them

A two year old murder case in the Washington County town of Plymouth is apparently ending in a plea bargain and the victim's family isn't happy.

According to the parents of the victim, 20-year-old Candie Belcher, the District Attorney's office offered to down grade murder charges to voluntary manslaughter for the accused, 24-year-old Mohymen Munnelyn. Munnelyn is Belcher's former boyfriend. His defense attorney says Munnelyn has accepted that plea.

Belcher's parents say the reason officials are downgrading the charges is because evidence that could have been key to the case was destroyed by police shortly after the incident. And Munnelyn's hand written confession was supervised by the same officer or officers involved.

Officials say Munnelyn's sentencing is expected Wednesday. He could serve up to 12 years in prison.
