A Wingate University football player and his wife are charged with murder in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend, who was a high school cheerleader in South Carolina.
Authorities say Pernell Clayton Thompson and Yolanda Dee Thompson are being held at the Union County jail, accused in the death of 16-year-old Marisha Jeter.
Police said Thompson's wife did not like him maintaining contact with Jeter. The Thompsons were married in the summer and have a child together.
Jeter was reported missing Thursday night and her body was discovered under a bridge two days later. Her car was found torched in another county. Jeter's body was discovered by an art student who was taking photographs at the bridge in Lockhart, which is about 10 miles northeast of the rural town of Union.
Thompson was a wide receiver for three years at Wingate, which is about 30 miles southeast of Charlotte.
