The state Division of Motor Vehicles is issuing driver's licenses and identification cards again after a national slowdown led officials to stop the process for one day.

DMV stopped issuing licenses Monday after a national database
system became overloaded. States use the system to verify
information before issuing licenses or identification cards.

Original Story

Forget about getting a North Carolina driver license or ID card in the near future.

A slowdown in a national computer system this morning prompted the North Carolina DMV to halt issuing all driver licenses and identification cards statewide.

The DMV says the national system became overloaded this morning, and that significantly affected the ability of local offices to issue licenses. North Carolina hopes the temporary halt will help the national system recover.

It's not known how long DMV offices will be off-line and those needed to get licenses are urged to call your local office first.
