Who Should Clean Up the Mess?

When a building burns down, who is responsible for cleaning up the debris? That's a question we wondered about a scorched skeleton of a restaurant in downtown Greenville. Officials tell us the restaurant, located on Albemarle Avenue, was set on fire by an arsonist in September 2003. Authorities say the owner is responsible for restoring or demolishing the burned building. The city attorney says a consent judgment was issued this year to force the owner, Bennie Roundtree, to clean up the property or go before a judge. The attorney also said the city may purchase the property, after an appraisal.
