It's a startling smoking statistic. Dare County is the second worst out of our state's 100 counties for cigarette sales to minors.
That's one reason high school students hit the streets this week on the Outer Banks. Students of the grant-funded "Peer Power" classes at all three high schools visited merchants to make sure notices and signs are in place, and interviewed cashiers and managers.
The students also give nutrition and anti-tobacco lessons to elementary and middle schools.
