U.S. Coast Guard Station Moving

With the ocean at their front door, the U.S. Coast Guard operations command in Buxton is abandoning it's base and heading down to the Crystal Coast. Over the course of a few months, the base has lost an 80 foot stretch of protective dune line. Staff are busy sandbagging sensitive structures, and work crews are relocating the security fence. No time line has been established, but the Cape Hatteras Group will move to Fort Macon and consolidate the two North Carolina response sectors under one command without loss of jobs. Dare County has expressed interest in taking over the base condominiums once the command is vacated, for affordable housing on Hatteras Island.
