The police chief in the Pamlico County town of Oriental has stepped down, after allegations he misused his power.

Town Manager Wyatt Cutler says Bobby Byrum resigned Christmas Eve, after less than two months as the town's police chief. Byrum is accused of improperly writing a speeding ticket after using a radar gun he was not trained to use.

Until a new chief is hired, the Pamlico County Sheriff's Office will handle major law enforcement tasks in Oriental.
