Breathing New Life Into Hyde County

The boards are starting to go down on a multimillion dollar project that organizers say will bring several jobs and a big chunk of change to Hyde County.

A 3,000 foot long boardwalk is just the first step in developing a 350 acre lot in Western Hyde County into a money making tourist attraction, according to Lewis Forrest with the Mattamuskeet Foundation. Forrest says Machapungo Park will bring 60 jobs to the immediate area and as many as 200 to surrounding areas through employers like hotels and restaurants that will eventually spring up.

The park will feature ten attractions ranging from a colonial homestead to an Indian village to boating excursions on the Pungo River.
