If you travel Highway 17 in Beaufort County late at night, you will be a reprieve--sort of.
The state DOT now says the bridge over the Pamlico River between Washington and Chocowinity will be closed starting January 14th--and not this coming Monday. Repair work on the span will shut down the bridge between 10 pm and 4 am each day until January 26th.
While traffic will be allowed to cross during a short period each hour, motorists are urged to take posted detours. For cars that means going through Grimesland, but truck traffic will be rerouted through Greenville.
