1,300+ Inmates Moved From Hyde, Tyrrell, Beaufort And Dare Counties

The Division of Prisons has completed the evacuation of inmates and most staff from Hyde Correctional Institution in Swan Quarter and Tyrrell Prison Work Farm in Columbia in advance of Hurricane Irene’s landfall.

More than 1,300 inmates were moved today from Hyde and Tyrrell to other prisons farther inland. They will remain relocated until the storm has passed and the facilities at Hyde and Tyrrell are determined to be safe for their return.

The Division of Prisons also accepted 140 inmates that were evacuated from county jails in Beaufort and Dare counties.

Buses and drivers are staged and ready should any further inmate movements be necessary.
