A bill to rename an Edgecombe County post office in honor of an African American trailblazer of civil justice in the East was introduced in the fall of 2003. This weekend, history will be made as the Tarboro Post Office is named after a former black Congressman, George Henry White. The bill to change the post office's name was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2003 and signed into law several months later by President Bush in June of 2004. George Henry White, who died in 1901, was an advocate for African American civil rights. Locally, White appointed 20 postmasters across the Second District, where he also served as the last African American elected into Congress after the Voting Right Act of 1965. The Tarboro Post Office will be named after White this Saturday, February 26. The public is encouraged to attend the unveiling ceremony, which begins at 1:30 p.m.
