Coast Guard Abandoning Station

The Coast Guard is leaving its station at Cape Hatteras following Winter storms that scraped away a 12-foot sand dune and brought the ocean to within 150 feet of the installation. Erosion along the beach has flooded the station's sewage treatment plant. During a Nor'easter last week, ocean overwash raced over the flattened beach and pooled around the housing and office area. A Coast Guard spokesman says plans to abandon the station were in the works before the erosion got worse.
