There are no environmental concerns that should keep Progress Energy Inc. from receiving an extension of its license to run the Shearon Harris nuclear power plant.
That's the conclusion of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff, which reviewed a request from the Raleigh-based utility for a 20 year license extension. The company applied to renew the license in November 2006, and its current license expires in October 2026.
The commission will move ahead with the renewal process and will hold public meetings next month in Apex.
The single-unit Harris plant is located about 22 miles southwest of Raleigh. In began commercial operation in 1987.
